Shoot-For Calculator
Overview
In this section, we walk through our 'Shoot-For Calculator' feature. This feature allows you to input a target distance, angle, size, etc., and we will calculate the exact shoot-for range and sight mark for you.
In addition, we will provide a plot of your arrow's trajectory for the shot and provide some ballistics information.
Prerequisites
Before running a shoot-for calculation for your setup, you'll need to have completed the following:
Navigate to the Shoot For Page
Select the bow and arrow you wish to use for shot.
Input the Target Information
In the below example, I'm shooting a target at 80 yards, 19 degrees uphill, and the target is 6 inches in diameter.
Tip
Use negative angles for downhill shots.
Once I select "Compute", the application will calculate the shot for me.
Review the Results
Here, it's telling me I need to shoot the target for 77.1 yards, despite my rangefinder telling me the horizontal distance is 75.6 yards. See our FAQ section for details on why rangefinders don't properly calculate cuts for uphill/downhill shots.
Note
In this example, I'm using a Montana Black Gold hunting sight. If I had used a target sight for sight-in with sight marks, it will supply the exact sight mark to use for the shot as well.
I'm shooting at a 6 inch target, and I have 1.5 yard range forgiveness value. So, my range can be off 1.5 yards and I'll still hit the 6 inch target, assuming a perfect shot.
Flight time is 0.9s, starting velocity is 288 fps, and ending velocity is 246.4 fps.
KE goes from 85.3 ft-lbs to 62.4 ft-lbs at the target.
In addition, we provide a plot of the arrow's trajectory for the shot. You can move your mouse over the plot to see the arrow's position and ballistics information at any point in time.
